Holiday Spirit in Las Vegas

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Surprisingly for the world we live in, one man decided to give this Christmas without expecting anything in return. A Las Vegas man published an ad in the Las Vegas Review Journal that asked people if there was anything he can do to help for the holidays and this Christmas he spent his night doing exactly that.

The man who is himself currently unemployed and does not have a financial cushion to fall back on decided a while ago that it feels much nicer to give than receive. He and a group of people that he managed to round up spent the day and evening helping people that were in need.

One of their stops was to a home on a street that was covered in Christmas lights with one house lacking not only decorations but also electricity. The family inside the house consisted of a husband, wife, and four children. Their power was turned off because the man could not afford to pay the bills after he had lost his job and the family is using candles for light and the fireplace for warmth for the home. The Las Vegas man had brought food and presents for the entire family trying to bring some holiday cheer.

The man spent the rest of Christmas day answering several ads as well as helping others that he knew were in need. He says its better to help others instead of concentrating on all the wrong things that are going on around you. And if everyone could just give a little more any chance they get the world would be a better place.

Encore Hotel and Casino Opens in Las Vegas

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Not fearing the economy and its overcast shadow on all things travel and tourism the newly designed and built 2.3 billion dollar hotel by Steve Wynn has opened its doors this week, with Monday being the first official day of operations.

With only suites throughout the entire building the prices will need to remain competitive during these trying times in order for Steve Wynn to have any remote chance of filling any or all the 2,034 suites that the new hotel and casino has to offer.

When asked, Steve Wynn says that he has a different approach to business than the rest of the competition in Las Vegas. He says that cutting jobs and hours for his employees would only be the last resort in his case and he much rather lower room rates and see more traffic coming through the casino and hotel rather than let his employees go.

The new hotel is a replica of the first Wynn tower with everything just a little better than the last. The hotel promises even better service, newer rooms and everything that is absolutely top of the line that the customers can ever imagine.

Las Vegas is hoping that the new Wynn tower will share some of its good fortune and bring new luck to the city that’s seen its share of bad cards recently. Latest numbers of visitors and tourism is the worst the city has seen in over ten years time.

American Economy Affecting Las Vegas Sands Macau Project

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The Las Vegas Sands stock which was well over the 100 dollar mark this time last year is quivering around the 6 dollar mark in recent trading. The company as a whole has been hit hard by this uncertain economy and the recession that is so surely upon those in the US. But the US economy is definitely not the only one feeling the rippling effects of what is going on in Las Vegas along with other cities that LVS has properties in.

The Venetian, that is the high end hotel beside its newer sister hotel on the Las Vegas strip experienced some serious lay off last month and that was said to just be the beginning. This month there was news that just this week the LVS group was in another binding position where the economic situation forced them to lay off another 500 employees from the Venetian project in Macau. They reported that this unfortunately is unlikely to be the last of the lay offs and they are likely going to have to cut hours for employees as well.

Employees as well as the company are in desperate need of some breathing room and are hoping that this recession will not last a very long time with a quick bounce back into the times that we experienced over the last several years with the economy booming at its brightest.

The company reports that while they are cutting jobs and hours the plans to continue to build the new hotel are still somewhat in the works and they are not anywhere close to completely closing up shop. The Las Vegas Venetian and Palazzo hotel and casino make for two of the most luxurious hotels anywhere in the United States.

The continuing fall in the economy means that there are special deals happening all around the US right now but particularly in Las Vegas. As most know the economy in the city is based largely on tourism and travel, thus making this an especially difficult time for the city to overcome. And due to this hotels throughout Vegas are trying to make it more enticing than ever for people to come have a taste of the luxury at a reduced cost to them.

Winter Wonderland is the Top Story for Las Vegas

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

It seems that no matter whether you live in Las Vegas or are simply trying to catch up on the latest Las Vegas happenings there is currently no bigger news than winter in Las Vegas. With the most recent week of snow in Las Vegas people are talking and everyone is shocked.

The strip in Las Vegas has very rarely seen even the site of a single snowflake, not to mention inches of snow enough to call for snow boots. And while locals seem to be enjoying this new experience that the city surely wasn’t prepared for, the visitors are finding it a little less than appealing.

“I travelled to Las Vegas from Winnipeg” said one man from Canada, “ My friends and I took an extended trip for a stag and holiday all combined in one, we currently have plenty of snow at home and were hoping to get away from winter, looks like we brought it with us instead”

It seems as though the cold and snow have not quite had enough either. The weather forecast calls for more cool temps and another possible snowfall before the New Year in Las Vegas. Weather experts said that while they saw a cold front approaching it wasn’t clear in severity and no one had expected the come down as it turned out.

Las Vegas officials are saying that they will continue to do everything they can to keep the city in order and running to plan. Transportation has been restored and the airport is back in action. Now the only hope is that there will be clear skies for those hoping to land in the city of lights for Christmas and of course New Years Eve.

White Christmas in Las Vegas

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

If you are travelling to Vegas over the holiday season you can more than likely expect a white Christmas this holiday season. As rare as it is for Vegas to get snow this has been the latest news as Vegas saw a bad winter storm on Wednesday which called for flight cancellations and created some serious traffic.

Las Vegas officials are not at all prepared to deal with snow fall, especially the amount of snow that they received this week. And while 3 inches of snow may seem like nothing for those in the Northern states and Canada it was quite a shock to those that are used to wearing sweatshirts as there form of winter attire.

One man said “I have lived in Las Vegas for the last 10 years and have never experienced a white Christmas- I move from New York and am used to snow for most of my life so I am actually looking forward to seeing it”

Weather reporters say that Vegas hasn’t seen the last of it either. There are predictions that at least another 8 inches are likely to fall later on in the week. And while snow does fall in some mountain parts, it is definitely not common on the strip! People are posing for photos and kids are enjoying the chill.

It seems that by most, the unexpected visitor is quite welcome. But if you are heading this way don’t forget to wear some layers and of course pack your winter jacket, hat and gloves!

New Years Eve in Las Vegas

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Planning a trip to Las Vegas for New Years Eve? Well the city of Las Vegas is also planning for you and several other visitors that are usual arrivals to bring in the New Year. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority are planning a great fireworks show and display to hit the streets of Las Vegas the night of new years for some free entertainment.

The fireworks show will be happening all through the strip the night of New Years eve and the show will be happening to the music of “taking it to the streets” with an arrangement of dance music and rock tunes that are sure to entertain.

The fireworks display is strategically planned so that all those staying on the strip in Las Vegas can have a peek at the action. There will be stations set up at several points including the south end of the strip starting at Mandalay Bay moving north with a stop at Luxor, MGM, Caesars, Treasure Island, Stratosphere and ending at Fremont street.

There will also be several bands performing music that has been popular this year and throughout the decade. The entire show is scheduled to take place in under 10 minutes time but is sure to be a wonderful display to catch and perhaps one of the only things in the city that is geared towards those with children looking to show them a good Vegas time this New Years Eve. For more information please look at the Las Vegas city information to find details about times and locations.

Treasure Island Las Vegas Sold

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

If you have ever been to the North end of the strip of Las Vegas in the evening than you are sure to have noticed that pirate show at the ever popular hotel and casino Treasure Island.

Treasure Island which is also known as T.I has been a popular destination for many over the years due to its great proximity to other hotels, the fashion show mall, and generally good location on the strip. T.I will be switching hands as it was just announced that the hotel which is currently owned by MGM, has now been purchased by developer Phil Ruffin.

The MGM group has sold the hotel for $775 Million and it is said that the transaction will be complete sometime within the second quarter of 2009. There are no current words on what the developers plans are for the hotel and if the hotel will remain the way it is under the same name or if there are plans to change the name and the hotel and casino.

Currently T.I welcomes visitors from varied budgets. With its revamped rooms and updated décor throughout the hotel the rooms currently range in rates starting from $69 dollars per night for a low volume weekday going up to $499 a night for a popular weekend day.

MGM is selling this hotel in an effort to refocus and perhaps make an effort to capture some of the lost funds that they have been experiencing in the last year. All throughout Vegas, casinos and hotels are feeling a chill in the air as the economy continues to weaken and the stocks continue to drop.
