Shakira To Be Awarded For Humanitarian Works

The 2011 Latin Grammy Awards ceremony will take place in Las Vegas at the Mandelay Bay Convention Center this year on November 10th. This year, Shakira is up for three trophies, and that’s not all. In total, Shakira has won seven Latin Grammy awards, and also two Grammys as well. After winning so many awards, you would think “what other award can she win?” and this year, people will see.

Shakira will be receiving a special award this year, on the even of the Latin Grammys. The award is the prestigious Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year award. Basically, the award is for strong philanthropy, like that of U2’s Bono.

What has Shakira done that warrants such a prestigious award? For one thing, when she was 18, she founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which is a charity that funds schools for many of Colombia’s impoverished children. Oprah built a school, but Shakira? She’s helped more than just one school. Another thing Shakira does that makes her deserving of this award is that she is serves as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, with her focus being on education. Last but not least, Shakira has performed at so many benefit concerts to help raise money for victims of natural disasters, and public and educational initiatives.

Shakira will be the youngest recipient of the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year award, and a large portion of the gala’s proceeds held in her honour will go to her foundation, as well as other educational efforts being made by the Latin Recording Academy.
