Cutback On Library Hours In North Las Vegas

Starting this summer, library hours in North Las Vegas will be cut back, due to budget cuts. According to library director, Kathy Pinnell, four employees are being laid off to help close a $310,000 deficit, and as a result of this, the library hours are now going from a total of 47 hours a week to 37 hours a week.

The new library hours at the following libraries are as follows:

Alexander Library, 1755 W. Alexander Road

Monday, Tuesday and Sunday: Closed

Wednesday and Thursday: Open 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: Open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Aliante Library, 2400 Deer Springs Way

Monday through Thursday: Open 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Friday and Sunday: Closed

Saturday: Open 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The library district operates from a special fund, and funding comes mainly from property tax and library fines. Since property tax has declined in the past few years, funding has not been the same.

It’s unfortunate that these libraries are cutting back their house so much. Prior to the recession, libraries in North Ls Vegas would be open around 63 hours a week. Now it’s going from 47 hours a week to just 37 hours.

The new hours will be in effect as of July 1st.
