MGM Mirage is now MGM Resorts International?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Last Tuesday, MGM Mirage filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to change its name. In the filing, it was stated that the company’s board of directors thought it was in the best interest of the company to change its name because of the company’s branding and marketing plans. The filing also cited that the new name would spread the corporate name more while still being a recognizable brand.

This isn’t the only time the MGM resort has been rebranded. Back in May 2000, the MGM Grand Inc was acquired by Steve Wynn’s Resorts, thus becoming the MGM Mirage. 10 years later, it is now the MGM Resorts International, but for how long?

Shareholders have been informed, and the annual meeting on June 15th will allow for shareholders to approve the change. For the time being, the change has become effective immediately, so now the MGM Mirage is now MGM Resorts International.

The name change has fueled talks that the company is trying to sell.

The MGM stands for Metro Goldwyn Meyer, in which the movie studio first purchased it. At the time, that would have made Kirk Kerkorian the largest shareholder. In 1993, The MGM Grand was the largest hotel in the world. In 1998, the largest bronze statue of a lion, “Leo”, was added to the front entrance.

While this TV show won’t be live, there will be many interested viewers that will like to catch a program that shows the entire cool up and coming product line up that will be launching from the technology sector at some point in the near future. The recent convention that was held in Las Vegas in the first week of January has been recorded and highlights will be aired on a special TV program that highlights the newest technology that everyone wants to have and know about!

The CES show in Las Vegas was a great big hit this year with the largest attendance in visitors as well as exhibitors as well. Many big names in the tech industry were there to introduce their newest and coolest inventions. Everything seems to be smaller and thinner than ever before. There were many new innovations that no one could ever even imagine and there were many outstanding items that were much safer for the environment and would last longer as well showing a focus to everything green.

Las Vegas was a great destination for this event as the show has been held in this location for several years in a row. The city was very accommodating to those that were visiting as there was much to do even when they were not at the show. The city also had something new to brag about that will actually be featured in the show. The new city center will also be a highlight in the TV program that airs sometime next month. Make sure to catch it when you can.

Las Vegas Plans to Make Some Financial Savings

Monday, October 5th, 2009

If there is anything that is true about Vegas it is that you don’t really associate Vegas with SAVING! There is certainly a lot of lavish spending but savings isn’t something that really comes to mind anytime that you think about Las Vegas or anything remotely associated with it. Well it seems like that is all about to change- if it hasn’t started to already?

The new plans for all the major hotels and casinos of the Las Vegas strip seem to have a similar tune and strategy plan for the next ten years at a minimum. And for the first time in a long time that strategy does not involve anything to do with spending. In fact, the idea is the complete opposite. The spending needs to stop and the saving and strategies need to move forward.

The focus for the last few years was building new, bigger and better hotels and casinos and launching the biggest new place to one up the guy that did it last. Well many are saying that this is what got so many hotel and casinos in Vegas in trouble and has them to their last hair in debt. The plan now is to focus efforts on marketing and some serious customer retention and loyalty management to keep people coming back at a constant rate rather than tearing down a building and putting up a shinier one.

Does this mean that everything gets dated? Absolutely not, the hotels will still be beautiful and well maintained and updated regularly but the building and million dollar investment projects into new developments will have to come to an end for at least the next little while. The plan to save may actually be one that yields a much better return. Only time will tell.

Las Vegas Property Getting Snatched Up

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

There has been a real halt in the real estate market in the US. Not just in Las Vegas but throughout all of the states actually and we have seen many homes go into foreclosure as well as many vacant properties to people simply abandoning their homes to run away from the financial crisis that they were experiencing.

There is a quite a bit of turnaround happening now and while it will likely take some time, maybe even a few years to stabilize the losses and make sure that those that lost homes are back to where they were a few years ago, it is also moving in the positive direction. Since real estate is still relatively cheap because all the trouble a few months ago, those that do have the capital to put into real estate are making a move right now.

Las Vegas investors and even those that are not in Las Vegas have began to pick up real estate in the city and put money back in. Historically this is a great financial investment. Picking up as much property as they can in good areas that were once very expensive and are now available at a much reduced price and can produce a great return as long as the investors have the capital to hold on to the properties while the market adjusts itself and gets back to par.

Las Vegas isn’t the only city that is seeing these investors coming in to pick up the pieces, there are other cities that have the exact same thing going on but only the future will tell if those people will come out prosperous in the long run! The investors know that any possibility of a great return usually involves some risk.

Las Vegas Pools

Friday, August 14th, 2009

If one thing is for sure than its that summer has come to Las Vegas. With temperatures in the 40’s (that is Celsius) and the dry Vegas air everyone is looking for a way to cool off and perhaps get a great tan while they are at it!

Well there if you are visiting Las Vegas during the summer months then you should surely consider checking out all the swimming pools that the Vegas hotels have to offer their visitors. And if you are a Vegas local than grabbing a day pass to the pools is also an option if you are looking for a fun way to cool off.

There are so many great places to check out! Starting from the manmade beach at the THEhotel which is located at the south end of the strip to the luxurious pools at the Wynn where you may even run into a celebrity or two catching some rays.

The pools are packed this time of year as those visiting Las Vegas actually step outside the casino doors to soak in the sun so make sure to have your swimsuit ready and wear lots of sunscreen as the days are HOT!

If you happen to forget your swimwear, purchasing some won’t be a problem at all as all the hotels have some shops that offer a great selection in swimwear and you are sure to find a great little number that you will wear again! Pool hopping is always a fun adventure in Las Vegas so if you are planning to check out the pools in the area make sure to see a few at a minimum.

Las Vegas Convention Center Picks Up

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

The Las Vegas convention center has been rather slow in the summer months but this summer is a bit different. The convention center seems to be hosting one event after the next. And this does not come as a surprise since there is obviously a lack of income in the city of Las Vegas and the city is doing everything it can to drive traffic inwards.

The majority of the eastern states and other places in North America have showed to have a rather colder than expected summer which has also helped Vegas to draw some summer visitors. And while traffic is not nearly as high as it has been in previous years it is still picking up at a steady pace.

The mayor of Las Vegas was recently asked for his predictions on the recession and what will become of the lively city of Las Vegas. The answer was positive but not completely clear, the mayor said that the next few months will really test the endurance of the city and people will likely need to keep Vegas in mind when planning a vacation to make sure that the economy of the city stays afloat.

He closed his statements by saying that Vegas is a city that counts on the travel and tourism sector quite heavily to drive their economy so the more people that keep planning their Vegas vacation the better the chances of the city coming out of this okay and stronger than before.

Harrah’s Opening New Online Casino

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Harrah’s is one of the biggest casino operators in the US, with locations in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno and other gambling capitals of the country. Now, they are planning on bringing the excitement overseas – via the World Wide Web. Harrah has recently started planning on opening an online casino for European players, which will be become a competitor some of Europe’s online gambling websites such as William Hill and Ladsbroke.

While a similar effort by MGM previously failed in recent years, Harrah’s believes that they are in a much better situation to take the leap into the only gambling world. In today’s economy, the casino industry is changing, as more and more people are seeing the benefits of gambling online. Most land-based casinos are expected to oppose online gambling because it presents itself as competition. But, as the recent economic crisis has gamblers staying closer to home and even at home to play their favourite casino games, American land casinos are beginning to realize that jumping on the online bandwagon could be advantageous.

However, there are still many people who continue to oppose the legalization of online gambling. Several casino owners continue to view online casinos not only as competition but as a possible embarrassment of the land-based casino industry.

Harrah’s is also at an advantage due to its ownership over rights to the World Series of Poker (WSOP), one of the biggest poker brands in the world. Harrah’s is a name that is widely recognized worldwide and they believe they will enter the European marketing with a readily-established reputation.
