Luxor Guest Dies Of Legionnaires’ Disease

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Since last Spring, three guests staying at the Luxor unfortunately developed Legionnaires’ disease. Recently, one of the three guests died as a result of getting the disease, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

It was reported by health district officials that the other two guests who also got Legionnaires’ disease had cases that were not fatal.

In Spring 2011, the health district conducted an environmental assessment on collected bulk water samples from the Luxor. This was done after being prompted when the first two cases of Legionnaires’ Disease came about at the Luxor.

Despite there being two guests who had gotten the disease, the water samples did not detect Legionella bacteria after being tested. That being said, because the resort’s water did not seem to pose a risk to exposing their guests to  Legionnaires’ Disease, that was the end of it, and both patients luckily recovered.

The third case of Legionnaires’ Disease did not end well for the third victim. The victim has stayed at the Luxor in December, and the disease came about later in the month.

Since then, the health district has conducted a new environmental investigation looking at Luxor water samples. These samples tested positive for the Legionlla bacteria, officials said, which is the cause of Legionnaires’ Disease.

Phantom Finishes Run At Venetian In September

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately, Phantom at the Venetian is one of them.

Considered one of Las Vegas’ staple production shows running, Phantom has had a good run for the past five years. The show will close this Fall on September, 2, 2012. The Phantom opened in June 2006.

The show’s company was told in a meeting at the Venetian with Scott Zeiger, the Entertainment co-Chief Executive Officer this week.

The Phantom lead, Anthony Crivello, has expressed that he believes that the decision made was purely business. “I’ll tell you, there was talk about us closing after a year or two, but we kept on going. It is a credit to Scott Zeiger that we held on for as long as we were in tough economic times, around the world and in Las Vegas.”

To keep the show profitable over the years, producers renegotiated union contracts. This past June, which was the Phantom’s fifth show anniversary, Scott Zeiger had expressed much confidence in the production. At the time, Zeiger said “First and foremost, from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hal Prince all the way to the associate choreographer and dance captain, the show is in great shape. The quality is still at a pinnacle. Any concierge or ticket broker in Las Vegas can recommend this show and be confident that whoever they are recommending it to is going to be highly entertained.”

If ever there was a time to see the Phantom, now’s the time to go! See it before it really is gone.

Significant Price Hike In Rooms During CES

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Tourists and residents alike will be flocking to the annual International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. For residents of Las Vegas, they have the home team advantage, not having to stay at a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Unfortunately for tourists that have not already booked their rooms, they are going to have a tough time getting an affordable room, though it is not impossible to get a room.

Room rates have gone up considerably for this week, and an example of just how much the price has been jacked up is The Riviera. The Riviera is close to the Convention Centre, and had rooms for just $39 last Thursday night. This week, on Tuesday and Wednesday night, those same rooms are going to cost guests $499! Next week, those same rooms are back to their regular $39. Room rates will start dropping this Thursday night, since CES’s last day is Friday.

As much as a stay at The Riviera is going to cost, there are other hotels on the strip that cost even more! The price hike in room rates this week is because CES is being held in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center as well as the Las Vegas Hotel and the Sands Convention Center.

CES is the largest trade show in North America, and this year, it is expected that over 140,000 attendees from 140 countries will be coming for the convention. Although CES officially begins tomorrow, and ends this Friday, many attendees like to get into town earlier for the preshow events.
